In the streets of Saint-Louis, it is the sounds that mark the day’s rhythm—especially the bird songs. While out wandering, we can hear them, numerous and talkative. The city, Ndar, itself is laid out in a grid. I saw it as a rhythmic chart: the map became my score and the birds became my musical instruments, like a playful game. I read a street from north to south (a migration path) as a musical line. Then I used the city blocks to create rhythmic echoes and add depth. Each block with the same surface area has the same sound. Blocks repeat and a rhythm is created. The length of the blocs determined the length of the sounds or the choice of the bird, some birds have short songs while others are longer. Thanks to Vieux Mamadou Ngom for sharing his knowledge of birds.
